Cleaning Hack: A One-Two Punch To Take Out Litter Box Odors

Those of us who own cats know how quirky, cute and funny they can be - but also how stubborn and hard to manage the odors from a litter box can be! Luckily, there is a natural, safe method to eradicating the pesky odors wafting from your cat’s box!

Step one: Baking Soda…we all know it’s not just for baking, and many of us use it for a variety of cleaning applications. But did you know that it neutralizes the acidity in cat urine? This can go a long way in having a fresher smelling home when you have a cat! Simply sprinkle baking soda in your cat’s litter box daily - we recommend doing so right after you clean kitty’s box. It will neutralize existing odors as well as providing a barrier against future smells.

Step two: Lavender Spray. A few different companies sell a version of this, but you can easily make it at home for a fraction of the cost. The recipe is simple: fill a spray bottle with water, add a splash of white vinegar and a few drops of lavender essential oil. Be sure the oil is 100% natural with no dyes or additives. Shake up the bottle and spritz it lightly around the rooms your cat frequents, and nearby their litter box. The vinegar will cut the odors from the air and fabric/uphosltery, while the lavender will provide a lasting pleasant aroma that will linger and leave your home smelling fresh. Now you can go back to enjoying your cuddly feline companion while breathing easier! NOTE: If spraying on furniture or upholstery of any kind, be sure to test on a non-visible area to ensure the essential oil doesn’t leave a stain.
